2010 Football World cup squads

Defiant England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson said Friday his team are good enough to not only beat Portugal but go on to win the World Cup. England go into their quarter-final match here on Saturday with a fully fit squad after Frank Lampard and Gary Neville both recovered from injury, and the Swede was in a determined mood at his pre-match press conference.

"I am extremely confident that this team we have can go all the way," he said.

"In football, you never know with red cards, own goals, but we have the quality to do it." Eriksson will pit his wits with Luiz Felipe Scolari, who has twice shattered English hopes in major tournaments, masterminding quarter-final wins in the 2002 World Cup with Brazil and Euro 2004 with Portugal.

But Eriksson said there was a difference now to then -- the team he has now is far better than in 2002 or 2004, and they also had the belief.

"We are better, we have a better squad, we have a better team," he said.

"We are still a young team but we have a lot of experience in the team too, so I am very confident and the players are much more confident today than they were two or four years ago." England's chances were boosted by news that Lampard and Neville are fit and will play, and that the roof will be closed on the Aufschalke Arena with another hot day forecast.

Lampard twisted an ankle in training on Thursday and was reported to be an injury worry, while Neville has missed the last three games because of a calf problem.

"He's fit, 100 percent, no concerns at all. He will play," Eriksson said of Lampard, adding that Neville was also "okay and will play." Neville's return will likely mean Owen Hargreaves switching to the midfield holding role with Michael Carrick, who did the job against Ecuador, on the bench.

Portugal, meanwhile, are sweating on the fitness of key winger Cristiano Ronaldo, who picked up a thigh injury in the second round win over the Netherlands last weekend.

Portugal are already without playmaker Deco and influential holding anchorman Costinha, who were both sent off against the Dutch.

Despite their apparent advantage with everyone fit and available to play, Eriksson knows everything will have to click on Saturday.

"Everything has to be right tomorrow, but it is difficult because Portugal have a fantastic team, we know that," he said.

"They have individual skill, are well organised, have good pace and technique, so everything must be right.

"We must keep the ball, be good in attack, defend well. You don't win quarter-finals if you don't do that.

"It will be a very tight game, to find space will be the key when you attack. It's Portugal-England, of course it's going to be tight. It's not going to be 5-0."

England keeps playing poorly at the World Cup and coach Sven-Goran Eriksson is running out of patience. "I never say to my players, 'go out and play bad football,' absolutely not," Eriksson said Friday. "If you play bad football for a long period of time, normally you don't win." Eriksson's team faces Portugal on Saturday in a quarterfinal in Gelsenkirchen needing to improve upon its lackluster play in its four tournament games so far. With victory essential, the coach says he won't hesitate to change things if the players aren't performing.

"I start with what I think is the best 11," Eriksson said.

"We're going to attack, we're going to defend. The system we use is the best I think we can use at the moment. Then, during the game, (I) might be changing." As usual, Eriksson wouldn't divulge his starting lineup, but with midfielder Frank Lampard fit after twisting his ankle in training and right-back Gary Neville recovered from a calf muscle injury that ruled him out of England's last three games, he has options.

Owen Hargreaves is likely to switch from makeshift right-back to holding midfielder - a role in which he impressed during England's 2-2 first-round draw against Sweden. Wayne Rooney probably will play as sole striker like he did against Ecuador in the 1-0 second-round win.

England lost a penalty shootout to Portugal in the 2004 European Championship quarterfinals, but Eriksson is sure his team is better than it was two years ago.

"I'm extremely confident this team we have can go all the way," Eriksson said. "We have a better squad, we have a better team. We are still a young team but there is a lot of experience." England trained Friday under the closed roof of Gelsenkirchen's stadium and the field will be covered again for Saturday's match - keeping out the heat and the sun that has previously hampered the team in Germany.

"Having the roof on is better than not because it's a little bit cooler and you avoid the sun," Eriksson said. "I'm very happy." Under Eriksson, England has reached the quarterfinals of its last two tournaments - the 2004 European Championship and the 2002 World Cup, where it was ousted by Brazil.

With as many as 30 million people in England watching on TV and about 70,000 fans around Gelsenkirchen, there is huge pressure to win a first World Cup since 1966, or at least match its semifinal run of 1990.

"Expectations are enormous and that's good," Eriksson said. "I like that. I like that very much."
