by the municipality to discuss its preparations to successfully host some of the matches during the world cup.

The specific areas include infrastructure, transport and logistics, communications and marketing, tourism and accommodation and safety and security.

However, these recommendations are still to be forwarded to Executive Mayor Nondumiso Maphazi.

The workshop brought together provincial and local government officials, including members of the Local Organising Committee (LOC).

Also present was Mr Alan Baloyi, regional manager of First National Bank (FNB), one of the tournament sponsors.

Mr Baloyi noted he was happy plans were on track.

"It is obvious to me that the stadium will be completed by December 2008, and that all other functions of the staging of the World Cup are moving along nicely.

"The municipality should be congratulated, and at the same time be very aware that we as important partners are more than willing to actively contribute to its success," he said.

The municipality's portfolio chairperson for recreation and culture Nancy Sihlwayi said over and above the technical delivery, the world cup had to follow a "transformation agenda, so that our legacy objectives are achieved."

"The 2010 World Cup gives us a unique opportunity to address the developmental agenda of our city and region."

She emphasised the importance of involving communities and stakeholders to ensure the multimillion Rand tournament resulted in tangible socio-economic benefits for the residents.

So far, the municipality has already approved a number of contracts for the construction of a stadium for 2010.

On Friday, Sport and Recreation Minister Makhenkesi Stofile and the Chief Executive of the Local Organising Committee Danny Jordaan, attended a sod-turning ceremony in the municipality for the construction of a 50 000-seater stadium in Port Elizabeth.

Mr Stofile said the municipality was ahead of other cities in its preparations, commending it for taking the initiative to start its preparations for the world's biggest soccer tournament.

The minister said the municipality had taken into account international standards required by FIFA when building a stadium, such as providing access for people with disabilities to attend the games.

"As you know, we have been working at quite a pace in order to meet the various timeframes as laid down by FIFA, the LOC and National Treasury," Ms Sihlwayi.

However, she said, to further meet the timeframes; there should be an inclusive drafting of a multitude of business plans, adding that it was equally important to revisit their institutional framework to ensure an inclusive approach for all internal and external stakeholders. - BuaNews
