There are huge concerns over World cup costs spiralling out of control in South Africa but Cape Town has managed to reduce the cost by adjusting the size of the stadium by 4 metres.
Cape Town mayor Helen Zille updated the media on developments with regard to the 2010 event.
"Following two weeks of negotiations between the city and the preferred bidder (Murray & Roberts), we have reduced the construction cost from R3,7 billion to R2,68 billion," Zille said.
"Given our budget of R2,49 billion we still need to negotiate the R180 million difference by which the tender price exceeds budget
"We have achieved this (cost saving) without compromising Fifa requirements and the functionality or the sustainability of the stadium," she said.
Zille says once the negotiations are through they will award the tender so thay they can have the contractor on site before the end of March which is the Fifa Local Organising Committee’s deadline.
