Pretoria - South Africans have the unique opportunity of choosing which of three designs will be the official poster for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

From 11 - 30 September, South Africans can chose their favourite design and stand a chance to win the first two tickets to be awarded to the public for the games, by FIFA World Cup Sponsor MTN.

There are three ways to vote in the competition, which is only open to South Africans.

Votes can be cast online at www.FIFA.com/poster, where the posters can be seen; send an SMS with the text A, B or C to 083 1 2010; or by calling 083 1 2010 during the competition period.

Every vote entered during the Competition Period will place the entrant into the draw for two single tickets to the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Only one vote may be placed per person and standard SMS and call rates apply.

Chief Executive Officer of the 2010 Local Organising Committee, Danny Jordaan said the official poster selection represented a very important public participation process.

"We want this to be an African World Cup and a people's World Cup. This is the beginning of our attempts to involve the people of our country in shaping the very important messages and images of this FIFA World Cup.

"The people of our country and continent have walked this road with us since we first attempted to host this event in 1994 and we have to continue this journey to deliver Africa's first FIFA World Cup together," said Dr Jordaan.

FIFA General Secretary Jerome Valcke said it was important for the people of the host country to have a final say in the choice of the official poster, which will represent the country up to the last whistle on 11 July 2010.

"I also want to congratulate the South African design industry on the creation of such wonderful artwork, all of which express the diversity and colourfulness of Africa in a symbiosis with the beautiful game," said Mr Valcke.

The three finalist designs were selected from 16 creative entries, all submitted by South-African based agencies.

The three proposals have been pre-selected by a jury comprising Mr Valcke, Dr Jordaan, Deputy Finance Minister Jabu Moleketi, South African playwright and author Wally Serote, artist and director of the Vega School of Brand Communication Gordon Cook and Minister in the Presidency Essop Pahad.

Minister Pahad said the three proposed posters were of a high quality, and urged the public to take part in the voting process.

"We want as massive a public participation process as possible from our people and I appeal to South Africans to participate in numbers.

"This is one of the most important public phases we will have in relation to the 2010 FIFA World Cup," said Mr Pahad.

The winning poster will be unveiled at the preliminary draw of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in Durban on 25 November.

The Preliminary Draw is the first FIFA event in the route to the world's greatest soccer spectacle.

This weekend, South Africans are preparing to celebrate the 1000-days countdown to 11 June 2010, when the first whistle of the 2010 World Cup will be blown.

On Friday, it will be exactly 1000 days before the nation joins Bafana Bafana in singing the national anthem in their opening match at Soccer City Stadium.

On Saturday, all nine host cities will be staging celebratory events, with the main event taking place at the Union Buildings.

The countdown event is seen as an opportunity to update the South African and international public about the progress made in the quest to deliver a successful world cup. -
