Eastern Cape 2010 Soccer World Cup Coordinating Committee member Mntwekhaya Nkwinti, said on Monday that the municipality's close proximity to the provinces only host city gives the district an added advantage to exploit the opportunities presented by the event.
Mr Nkwinti was speaking at the first stakeholder meeting aimed at establishing a 2010 Cacadu District Forum.
It was attended by councillors and administrators and its local municipalities together with members of the Nelson Mandela Bay 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa Office.
Mr Nkwinti said opportunities such as lobbying soccer teams to have their base camps in Cacadu would have a positive effect on local industries in particular the hotel and accommodation industry.
Other positive spin-offs would include heritage and tourism activities in and around the district.
A Policy Formulation and Regulation Committee, as well as a steering committee and six working groups focusing on six different areas will be established in conjunction with the district forum which will be announced in November 2007.
This committee will be chaired by district Mayor Mlungisi Mvoko and will also have representatives from the Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture and local municipalities, said Nkwinti.
The core responsibility of this committee is to oversee the whole process of the district's 2010 Forum.
The steering committee will bring together representatives from the department, South African Football Association, sports councils and community service officials of the district municipality.
The six working groups will be mandated to address issues such as infrastructure development, safety and security, the legacy and sustainability of the world cup, information technology and telecommunication, finance and legal matters.
"The abundance of tourism products and accommodation establishments in Cacadu are the area's unique selling points which must be prioritised by the forum," said Mr Mvoko.
The district municipality is committed to pulling together all its stakeholders and ensuring that platforms to participate in the preparations of the world cup are availed to all communities, he said.
The district stretches from Graaff-Reinet in the north to the Indian Ocean in the south, and between the Bloukrans River in the west and Great Fish River in the east.
