Melbourne - Everton midfielder Tim Cahill says he will return to Australia for next month's opening FIFA World Cup qualifier against Qatar if wanted by new national team coach Pim Verbeek.

Mr Cahill is among a group of European-based Socceroos Verbeek is considering summoning to Australia for the important 6 February match in Melbourne.

The coach is assessing his available talent from the domestic A-League before naming his squad later on Wednesday, reports FIFA on its official website.

However, last week on Thursday, Mr Cahill joined other overseas players, including Italian-based duo Vince Grella and Mark Bresciano, to commit to the game if required.

"I'm available for Australia any time," Mr Cahill told local radio last week.

"I fought so hard in court cases and things to play for Australia," he added, referring to his legal battle with governing body FIFA for eligibility with the Socceroos after representing Samoa at U-20 level. I'm not all of a sudden going to turn around and say I don't want to play for Australia."

Everton have league games scheduled either side of the qualifier, against Blackburn on 2 February and Reading on 9 February.

However, Mr Cahill said he anticipated no problems in travelling to Australia as long as Mr Verbeek and Everton boss David Moyes approached the situation carefully.

"I've had a meeting with Pim and David Moyes and I think it just comes down to commonsense with Pim and commonsense with Moyes," Mr Cahill said.

"But he [Verbeek] knows he's got my 100 per cent backing and that's the main thing."

Mr Cahill has been in great form in the Premier League since returning from a left foot injury. He has scored three times in his past four league games and is Everton's second-highest scorer this season with six goals. -
