Organizers of the 2010 World Cup greeted FIFA inspectors with a united front Monday after weekend reports of internal rifts.

Irvin Khoza, chairman of the local organizing committee, said a front page story in South Africa's Sunday Times - under the headline "2010 Turmoil" - was a fabrication and denied a serious rift with organizing chief Danny Jordaan.

The Sunday Times, quoting anonymous sources, said the organizing committee was split between the two men, and that Jordaan had also clashed with communications chief Tim Modise.

Modise stressed his commitment to the organizers Monday, as did Khoza.

"There is a lot of despondency (in South Africa)," Khoza said at a news conference. "The 2010 FIFA World Cup is one project which gives hope to all of us. Let us not destroy it."

The inspection tour visited Ellis Park in Johannesburg and Pretoria's Loftus stadium. It will tour six of the 10 host cities to check on infrastructure, IT, transport, accommodation and marketing.

Despite early delays and a series of strikes, most stadiums are now reportedly on schedule but there remains concern that South Africa's transport system won't cope.

Authorities are grappling with accommodation shortages and trying to calm fears about high crime rates.

Electricity shortages in many parts of South Africa are also expected to be on the agenda.

South Africa will be the first African nation to host the World Cup.

FIFA and local organizers have repeatedly denied rumors that the tournament might be moved elsewhere.

"This World Cup can never fail," said Khoza, adding that "many sacrifices" had already been made.

"(Nelson Mandela) defied doctor's orders to travel with us to Zurich for our final 2010 bid presentation. After we won the bid, Madiba (Mandela) said, 'Now I can see my grave,"' Khoza added. "You can't be responsible for failing a man of that caliber."

It has also been reported that Khoza was so incensed by reports that he and Jordaan were fighting over tenders that he told a reporter to “ stop thinking like a kaffir because you are misconstruing something that is not there”.
