England's chances of staging the 2018 World Cup have suffered a potentially damaging blow after it emerged that The Football Association may have to undergo an Olympic-style preliminary round in order to eliminate their European bidding rivals, writes Andrew Warshaw in the Telegraph.
Uefa president Michel Platini has warned that Europe risks losing the bid to another continent unless it presents a united front.
"A preliminary round for Europe is a very likely option, just like the Olympic model," a well-informed source said.
