Wayne Rooney is a doubt for the World Cup after fracturing a metatarsal bone in his right foot during Manchester United's game against Chelsea.

Rooney has been told he could be out for six weeks, exactly the amount of time until England's first match against Paraguay on 10 June.

Rooney was stretchered off late in Man Utd's defeat at Stamford Bridge. Rooney is seen as being key to England's hopes at the World Cup and any concerns over his fitness would add to England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson's injury worries.

Doctors have confirmed that England star Wayne Rooney has broken his foot, dampening his chances to play in the World Cup.

Manchester United said the 20-year-old broke the fourth metatarsal on his right foot when he was tackled during the match against Chelsea.

It is not the first time foot injury has damaged the England team's prospects.

Shortly before the 2002 World Cup, captain David Beckham broke his second metatarsal and, despite managing to lead the team out in Japan, appeared to be struggling for fitness.

Rooney collapsed clutching his foot and had to be stretchered off following a seemingly innocuous tackle in Manchester United's 3-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge this afternoon.

He was later filmed limping on to the team coach.
