Winners Italy 4-2 against Hungary

War clouds hung over the event awarded to France because of their first FIFA president Jules Rimet.

Austria were unable to compete, as the country had been annexed by Hitler.

England yet again declined FIFA's invitation, and also absent were 1930 finalists Uruguay and Argentina.

The French rejoiced when the German team - fielding eight Austrians -were eliminated in the first round by Switzerland, and then turned their anger at the second fascist European country Italy.

But Italy's new-look team, with only two left of the 1934 squad, defeated France 3-1 in the quarterfinals and then made it into the final with a 2-1 over Brazil.

In the second semi, the brilliant Hungarians stopped Sweden with a convincing 5-1.

But in the final they ran out of luck against a disciplined Italian team.

Calaussi and Piola struck twice each as Italy won back- to-back titles with a 4-2 scoreline in an entertaining final in Paris.

Even the French finally cheered when Italy took the trophy.
