Final Winners Italy 2-1 against Czechoslovakia
England and Uruguay were not present when 16 teams qualified for the finals in Italy, which the fascist regime of Benito Mussolini turned into a huge propaganda show - with the desired outcome.
The rustic Italian team coached by the shrewd Vittorio Pozzo were in trouble in the quarterfinals when they managed only a 1-1 draw with Spain.
The rematch the following day saw seven Spaniards and four Italians out injured and a shameful show from referee Mercet of Switzerland, who allowed an irregular Italian goal and denied Spain a correct one for a final 1-0 scoreline.
Germany for the first of many times, Austria and the Czechs completed the semi-finals, where Italy edged the Austrians with another 1-0, and Czechoslovakia defeated Germany 3-1.
The Czechs were also the better team in the Rome final before a 55,000-crowd including Mussolini.
Puc put the Czechs on top in the 70th minute, but Raimondo Orsi forced extra time with Italy's equalizer in the 82nd.
Angelo Schiavio then got the winner for Italy.
