Final Winners Uruguay 4-2 against Argentina
Just 13 teams decided to make the trip to the South American debut of what is now the biggest event in the world for a single sport.
The most notable absentees included the game's mother country England as well as the then dominant European teams - Austria, Hungary and Czechoslovakia.
One of just four European teams, Yugoslavia, flew the continent's flag into the semifinals by upsetting Brazil 2-1.
They were joined in the final four by the hosts, Argentina and the United States.
The two matches turned out to be lopsided affairs - Uruguay blasted Yugoslavia 6-1 and Argentina hammered the U.S. by the same scoreline.
Led by their star Leone Andrade, who died impoverished in 1957, Uruguay won the "Coupe Jules Rimet" with a late 4-2 win over their neighbours.
Argentina boasted first top scorer in Guillermo Stabile.
