Sale Sharks edged the Northampton Saints 24-18 in an exciting encounter but finished just outside of the top four.
Juan Lobbe put Sale ahead in the 21st minute with a try which Charlie Hodgson couldn't convert. Northampton got onto the scoreboard through a penalty from Stephen Myler and soon found themselves in the lead when Neil Best went over the tryline.
Four minutes later Chris Ashton was yellow-carded, but the Saints managed to hold on to their lead while being a man short. The Sharks finally made a breakthrough in the 53rd minute when Eifion Roberts sailed over the line and the game was brought level.
Just three minutes later Sale extended their lead through Dean Schofield. Mathew Tait came in for Sale's fourth try of the day to put the result beyond the visitors.
Northampton hit back with another penalty through Myler and a 78th minute try from Sean Lamont. Sale finished in fifth place on the Guinness Premiership table while Northampton finished in eighth.
