World Champions lose first match as Champions

World champions Italy who played without any of the players involved in the World cup in Germany were brought quickly down to earth when they lost 2-0 at home to Croatia in a friendly.

It was their first game under new coach Roberto Donadoni the Italian reserves saw the end of Italy's 25-game unbeaten run come to an end as first half goals for Eduardo da Silva and Luka Modric.

Croatia had a new coach too in Slaven Bilic who made an impressive start.

Elsewhere in Europe they were some big results in the Euro 2008 warm-up friendlies. Germany, Netherlands and England all claimed big wins.

Germany beat Sweden 3-0, England swept aside European champions Greece 4-0 while the Dutch were impressive 4-0 winners in Ireland while France snatched a late 2-1 win in Bosnia.
