UEFA president Michel Platini says he will put pressure on FIFA to ensure the 2018 World Cup takes place in Europe.
The Frenchman entered the debate after FIFA president Sepp Blatter hinted the rotation policy would see North and Central America earn the chance to bid for the 2018 tournament.
It had previously been thought Europe would be the host continent.
England has made no secret of its desire to bid for 2018 – and Platini added he would back such a bid.
Platini said: “As the president of UEFA, I will do my best to bring the World Cup back to Europe.
“I would like the World Cup to be staged in Europe every four years. If it is not possible, then as soon as possible.”
